Why Environmental Portraits Tell Your Business Story Better Than a Studio Headshot

Kate Cotterill, co-founder and CEO, She Grows Veg.

As a professional photographer based in Ipswich, I spend a significant amount of my time working with entrepreneurs, creatives, and business leaders across Suffolk, East Anglia and London. Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful photography can be in shaping the way you and your business are seen.

One of my specialities is creating Environmental Portraits – portraits taken in meaningful surroundings that bring your story to life. These are different from traditional studio headshots. They place you in a setting that reflects your personality, your values, and the unique character of your brand.

Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing Kate Cotterill, CEO of She Grows Veg, for an editorial commission. Instead of choosing a studio, we shot at her home and by a nearby riverside spot. That decision alone changed everything: the portraits had texture, warmth, and authenticity that perfectly suited her business story.

The Benefits of Environmental Portraits

Here’s why I believe Environmental Portraits can give you the edge when it comes to your business and personal branding:

1️⃣ Authenticity: Natural surroundings feel more real and human, which resonates with clients and audiences.

2️⃣ Comfort: Familiar environments help people relax, which makes for stronger, more natural portraits.

3️⃣ Practicality: Outfits, props, or even a cup of tea are on hand, making the shoot stress-free.

4️⃣ Creativity: The environment itself provides inspiration, shaping poses, expressions and moods.

5️⃣ Value: With no studio hire needed, more of your budget goes into the actual creative work.

The result? A set of portraits that not only look polished and professional, but also speak volumes about who you are and what your business stands for.

Why This Matters for Personal Branding

Personal branding photography isn’t just about having a nice headshot. It’s about building trust, visibility, and authority. When potential clients look at your website, LinkedIn profile, or marketing materials, they should gain a clear sense of your professionalism and your personality. That’s what helps you stand out in crowded industries.

Environmental Portraits are especially effective for this because they tell a story. If you’re an entrepreneur in Suffolk building a business rooted in community, why not be photographed in a space that reflects that? If you’re a London-based executive, perhaps your office skyline tells its own story. For Ipswich creatives, this could be an Artist space, a riverside or beach location, a small café, a Co-Working Space, a boutique hotel or a historic building that can add richness and depth to the visual narrative.

From Ipswich to London: Who I Work With

I regularly work with business leaders in Ipswich, Suffolk, and East Anglia, as well as clients in and around London who want a more editorial and refined approach to portraiture.

My style has been described as “editorial meets business branding” – powerful, natural portraits that feel like they belong in a magazine, while still serving the practical needs of your business or career.

Discover how I help entrepreneurs, executives, and creatives tell their stories through images that truly connect.

Choosing the Right Setting

Could Kate’s portraits have been taken in a studio? Absolutely. However, by working on location, her images gained an extra layer of authenticity that simply can’t be replicated with a plain backdrop. Now she has a versatile library of photographs for press coverage, publications, and her own marketing.

When we plan your shoot, I always ask: What environment best tells your story? Sometimes that’s four clean studio walls. Other times, it’s your home office, your workshop, or a local landmark that says something about your identity. My role is to match the setting to your story, so the images work harder for you long after the shoot is done.

Visualising your Brand

Whether you’re building a personal brand, growing a business in Suffolk, or leading a team in London, the right photography is one of the most powerful tools you can invest in. Environmental Portraits give you more than just a headshot – they give you a visual story that builds connection, credibility, and confidence.
