WHY CHOOSE JOHN FERGUSON?

Forty years photographing real people.

I'm John Ferguson, a commercial and editorial photographer specialising in photographing people. Based in Suffolk and working across London, the UK and internationally, I've spent forty years photographing everyone from business leaders and entrepreneurs to actors, artists and public figures.

Experience matters, but only if you know what to do with it. Forty years photographing people has taught me when to direct, when to talk, and when to get out of the way.

An editorial eye. A human approach.

Editorial Experience.

Decades of observing people, understanding character and telling authentic stories.

John brings the perspective of an editorial photographer into every commercial assignment.

Real People. Real Connection.

Great portraits are not created by forcing a pose.

They come from understanding people and creating an environment where confidence appears naturally.

COMMERCIAL PURPOSE

John works with business leaders, companies and organisations to create photography that communicates credibility, character and trust.

Selected portraits

People are more interesting than poses.

A portrait should communicate more than appearance. It should reveal confidence, personality and character.

I photograph people with something at stake: founders, makers, performers, entrepreneurs and the quietly brilliant.

PERSONAL BRANDING PHOTOGRAPHY FOR PEOPLE WHO NEED TO BE REMEMBERED.

Your photograph often creates the first impression before a conversation begins.

I create portraits for professionals, founders and business leaders who need to look credible, confident and recognisably themselves.

If you want images that feel human but look expensive, we should talk.

Businesses are built by people.

I work with businesses, agencies and organisations to create commercial photography that shows the people, culture and expertise behind the business.
From executive portraits and advertising campaigns to workplace photography and editorial commissions, the aim is simple: photographs that feel believable, distinctive and worth looking at.

THE JOHN FERGUSON APPROACH

A thoughtful approach from start to finish.

Good photographs start before I pick up the camera. They come from understanding the person, the purpose of the photographs and what those images need to achieve.

01

     DISCOVER

Understanding your story, goals and the message your photography needs to communicate.

Before the camera comes out, I take time to understand who you are, your audience and what the photographs need to achieve.

02

      PREPARE

Creating the right environment for authentic portraits.

Location, lighting, style and atmosphere are considered in advance, so the photography feels relaxed rather than improvised.

A man in a blue jacket and khaki pants holds a vintage film camera up to his face while another camera hangs at his side.

03

      PHOTOGRAPH

A relaxed process focused on natural confidence and genuine expression.

I direct when direction is needed, talk when it helps and step back when the moment is already there.

04

     Deliver

Images created to represent you and your business with clarity.

Carefully selected and finished photographs ready to use across your website, PR, marketing and communications.

"I'd just seen a large retrospective exhibition of John's work, both his commercial and editorial photography. The quality stopped me in my tracks. Hiring him for my new website and marketing images was an easy decision, and the results were outstanding."

"From our first conversation, John made it clear that he was not just a photographer, but a storyteller. He took the time to understand my journey, my values, and the unique elements that define my brand."

        | Paolo Emilio Zanini, TBD Media

"John didn't just take photos, he crafted a visual story that reflects the heart of who I am and what I stand for. It felt like he captured the real me, not just a pose or a moment."

| Georgy Jamieson, Broadcaster

"Working with John Ferguson has been a game-changer for my career. His creativity and professionalism helped turn our initial shoot into impactful 'live art' pieces."

Portrait photography for people who need presence without stiffness.

Most people aren't comfortable in front of a camera. They don't need to be.

I give enough direction to make you feel confident, without directing the life out of the photograph.

The result is portraiture that feels considered, confident and recognisably you.

Behind the portrait.

The photograph is only part of the story.

Through my journal, I share the people, assignments and experiences behind the images, and what nearly forty years of photographing people has taught me along the way.

Need photographs that reflect where you're going, not where you've been?

Whether you're building your own reputation or representing an organisation, tell me what you're working on. A 20-minute conversation is usually enough to work out what you need and whether I'm the right photographer for it.
