I’ve spent more than 40 years photographing people. And what I’ve learned about ageing might surprise you.

After four decades behind the camera, from CEOs and entrepreneurs to actors, artists, and local legends across Suffolk, London and beyond, I’ve realised something important: age has almost nothing to do with how old you look.

I’ve met twenty-somethings who already seem weary of the world, and seventy-somethings who stride into the room as if life’s still offering them one more dance.

The difference isn’t the wrinkles or the grey hair. It’s energy. It’s curiosity. It’s that quiet confidence that says, “I’m not finished yet.”

The camera never lies, but it does reveal

When I’m photographing someone... whether it’s a business leader, a performer, or a creative entrepreneur…. I’m not interested in perfection. I’m interested in honesty.

That’s what makes portrait photography so rewarding. It’s about finding those small, fleeting moments when someone forgets about the lens and simply is. The moment when the mask drops and their true self comes through.

That’s when a photograph starts to breathe. You see not just how someone looks, but who they’ve become.

For me, that’s what good portraiture and personal branding photography are about: helping people be seen for who they really are. Not airbrushed, not polished beyond recognition, but real. Because the camera might not lie, yet it reveals far more than appearance alone.

Ageing isn’t the enemy — in life or in photography

We live in a culture obsessed with looking young. Filters, retouching and “perfect” headshots are everywhere. But after decades as a professional portrait photographer, I can tell you this: the most powerful images are never flawless. They’re human.

The people who age well aren’t the ones with the smoothest skin; they’re the ones who’ve stayed curious, courageous, and open to life. They’ve lived. They’ve learned. They’ve built something to be proud of.

That kind of presence, that quiet assurance, is what makes an image captivating. Whether I’m photographing a company director for their website, a consultant updating their professional portraits, or a creative building their personal brand, what I’m really looking for is authenticity. I want to show the experience, the warmth, and the spark that only time gives you.

A portrait should tell your story — not your age

In my Ipswich studio, or out on location across Suffolk and East Anglia, I spend time helping people relax in front of the camera. Most of my clients start by saying they dislike being photographed. That’s normal. But once they settle in, something changes.

The best portraits happen when someone feels at ease enough to show who they really are. That’s when the photograph starts telling a story.

Because that’s the heart of personal branding photography: showing the person behind the title. The one who’s lived a bit, worked hard, learned a few lessons, and still has that fire to keep going.

So, what does your image say about you right now?

If your current portraits don’t reflect who you are today... the journey, the confidence, the spark, then perhaps it’s time to update them.

Good photography doesn’t just help people recognise you; it helps them connect with you. It reminds them you’re real. That you’ve earned your place.

That’s why I do what I do. I help people see themselves as they are, not as they think they should be.

So if you’re ready to create beautifully crafted portraits that go deeper, that capture your story with honesty and craft, then let’s talk.
